About Gengar cards

Gengar's first card came out in Japan in June 1997, in the Mystery of the Fossils expansion. English players got the same card in Fossil in October 1999, as a holo (5/62) and a non-holo (20/62). Since then Gengar has appeared in nearly every era of the Pokémon TCG, from Wizards of the Coast to Mega Evolution.

How many Gengar cards are there?

We list 133: 71 English and 62 Japanese. Stamped, promo and special-pattern versions count separately, because collectors buy them separately. Chinese, Korean and other languages aren't included.

How are Japanese Gengar cards different?

Japanese sets usually come out months before their English versions, under different names: Phantom Gate is Japan's Phantom Forces, and Tag Bolt is Team Up. Some Japanese Gengar cards were never printed in English, including the Masaki promo, which was given out in 1998–99 to players who mailed in a Haunter card and a Bill's PC card, and Morty's Gengar from Pokémon VS.

Which Gengar cards are worth the most?

The most sought-after are early holos and promos like Sabrina's Gengar from Gym Heroes and the Masaki promo, and modern alternate arts like Gengar VMAX 271/264 and Gengar & Mimikyu GX 165/181.
